Algeria Marks 64 Years of Independence: Honoring a Legacy of Freedom and Youth

The Celebration of Algeria’s 64th Independence Day and Youth Day
The Embassy of the People’s Democratic Republic of Algeria in Dhaka will commemorate the 64th Independence Day of Algeria along with the National Youth Day, to be held on 5 July 2026. The celebration will observe the historic proclamation of Algeria’s independence on 5 July 1962, marking the end of 132 years of French colonial rule. The occasion also coincides with National Youth Day, a tribute to the generations of young Algerians whose courage, sacrifice and unwavering commitment formed the backbone of the National Liberation Revolution.
Held under the theme “The Legacy of Generations”, the observance will honor the sacrifices of Algeria’s glorious martyrs while highlighting the responsibility of today’s youth to preserve the nation’s hard-earned sovereignty and contribute to its continued development and prosperity.
More than a national commemoration, Algeria’s Independence Day stands as a universal symbol of resilience, dignity, justice and the legitimate struggle of peoples for freedom and self-determination. The Algerian Revolution remains one of the defining milestones of the global decolonization movement, inspiring liberation struggles across Africa, Asia and beyond, and establishing Algeria as a steadfast supporter of peoples striving for independence and national sovereignty.
This historic legacy continues to shape Algeria’s foreign policy, which is firmly anchored in the principles of self-determination, non-alignment, respect for sovereignty, peaceful settlement of disputes and support for just causes. As a strategic bridge between the Mediterranean and the Sahel, Algeria continues to play an important role in promoting regional stability, dialogue and international cooperation.
On this landmark occasion, the Embassy will present a comprehensive showcase of Algeria’s rich cultural heritage through music, traditional arts, cuisine and national customs, reflecting the diversity and authenticity of the Algerian identity. The programme will also include interactive exchange sessions with distinguished stakeholders including war veterans, journalists, academicians, educators, members of the Scout movement, entrepreneurs, among others, aimed at deepening mutual understanding and strengthening the longstanding bonds of friendship between Algeria and Bangladesh. The event will further provide a platform to highlight Algeria’s ongoing economic transformation, investment-friendly reforms and the vast opportunities available for bilateral trade and investment across key strategic sectors.
The celebration will likewise highlight the growing friendship between Algeria and Bangladesh, founded on a shared history of anti-colonial struggle and the pursuit of national independence. Algeria takes pride in having been the first Arab country to recognize the independence of Bangladesh in 1971, laying the foundations for the enduring partnership that continues to unite the two brotherly nations.
On this solemn anniversary, the Embassy pays tribute to the righteous martyrs of Algeria’s War of National Liberation and expresses its profound respect for all those who sacrificed for the freedom, dignity and sovereignty of their nation. Their enduring legacy continues to inspire present and future generations in Algeria, Bangladesh and around the world.
