Dhaka, Friday, October 17, 2025 — The Algerian Embassy in Bangladesh marked the 64th anniversary of the October 17, 1961 massacres with a ceremony under the theme “Cohesion and Commitment.” The event, attended by prominent figures from various sectors, began with the raising of the Algerian flag, followed by a minute of silence, Quran recitation, and a prayer for the martyrs. Ambassador Abdelouahab SAIDANI delivered a keynote on the massacre, observed as National Emigration Day, honoring the courage of 30,000 Algerians who protested for justice and independence, only to face violent repression. Despite the brutality, the massacre sparked Algeria’s path to independence. The Ambassador emphasized the importance of remembering this day to combat oppression and draw strength from the past. He also highlighted the shared struggles of Algeria and Bangladesh for freedom, urging unity and peace between the two nations. The ceremony concluded with a cultural program by the Bangladesh Scouts and a documentary on the massacres, reflecting the resilience of the Algerian people.
