The Department of Arabic at the University of Dhaka organized a grand ceremony today, Monday (October 12, 2026), to mark the Freshers’ Reception, Farewell for Graduates, Scholarship Distribution, and Meritorious Students’ Reception for the year 2026 at the R.C. Mazumdar Arts Auditorium.
His Excellency Dr. Abdelouahab Saidani, Ambassador of Algeria to Bangladesh, attended the event as the Guest of Honor upon a gracious invitation from Professor Dr. Md. Mizanur Rahman, Chairman of the Department of Arabic. The event was attended by distinguished faculty members, guests, students, and proud parents.
In his keynote address, the Algerian Ambassador expressed his profound gratitude to the departmental leadership for the invitation, noting that it reflects the deep respect and appreciation Bangladesh holds for Algeria and its historic role in the Arab world. He lauded the students for choosing to study the Arabic language, emphasizing that Arabic—spoken by over 400 million people globally—is not only a language of rich heritage and literature, but also a vital medium for science, technology, and international relations.
Ambassador Saidani highlighted Algeria’s steadfast efforts in advancing and modernizing the language through national institutions, notably the High Council for the Arabic Language (al-Majlis al-A‘la li-Lughah al-‘Arabiyyah), adding that over 50 universities across Algeria host dedicated departments for Arabic language and literature. He stressed the importance of bolstering academic cooperation and cultural exchange between Algerian universities and Arabic departments in Bangladesh.
The ceremony concluded with the distribution of scholarships and academic excellence awards to deserving students and graduates, celebrating their achievements and encouraging the incoming class toward academic and ethical leadership.
